Hi, this is Omar the pharmacist,
today I want to tell you about a patient who came to the pharmacy asking about an Iodine prescription.
At first I thought it was just an OTC supplement request that he wants for his thyroid support, But when I looked at the dose he requested it was like more than thousand times the dose recommended for OTC supplement , I asked him why he needed this dose of iodine? he told me : Because me and my family are traveling to Europe, and we want to have iodine to protect us in case of a radiation threat Due to the war in Ukraine; the nuclear plants have radioactive iodine in them and when there is radiation threat there will be health emergency of the spreading of the radioactive iodine in the air and for people who are going to be exposed to this threat can get thyroid cancer, and the way to mitigate this fear is to have on hand iodine taken as prescription dose that start from 16.5 mg for infants up to 130 mg for adults taken once a day for the time you are going to be in the place or in the area where there is radiation threat, so I wanted to share with you this information because when I did my research for the FDA approved companies that make iodine tablets and liquids we found out that they were in very short supply ; we actually couldn’t get the commercially available products for the person who asked about the potassium iodine; the salt that delivers iodine to the human body taken orally , we had to compound it as capsules because it wasn’t commercially available.
And doing some research for some doctors I know with patients who are traveling to Europe I found out that many people are asking about iodine, an
it is only with a written prescription from a prescriber to get this dose but also this is only when there is a health hazard or threat announced by the CDC and the FDA and we are not there yet, WE HOPE WE NEVER BE!
So I thought that I have to tell you the difference between the iodine you hear about that is used and distributed now in Europe and what you see on the shelf sold as OTC.
Doses for the thyroid gland support in normal conditions are measured in Microgram but dosages that are needed to protect in case of radiation threat these are milligrams which is a thousand times higher dose .. the doses for the radiation threat are as follows
for adults its 130 mg. daily taken once daily as tablets or can be compounded as capsules
for the age of 1-month-old 16.5 mg
from 3 years old to 18 years old it’s like 65 mg
if you have more questions please drop in a comment or come to welltopiarx.com and chat with us.
Finally, I want to say that this information is for general knowledge only and what I have provided you with has not been viewed or edited by the FDA or CDC
Thank you and have a wonderful day
Frequently asked questions!
Is Potassium Iodide the same as iodine?
Potassium iodide (KI) is the same form of iodine used to iodize table salt. KI floods the thyroid with iodine, thus preventing radioactive iodine from being absorbed. If taken at the proper time, KI protects the thyroid from radioactive iodine from all sources – air, food, milk, and water.
Does iodine protect against nuclear radiation?
What is Potassium Iodide (KI)?
KI (potassium iodide) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine that can help block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland, thus protecting this gland from radiation injury.
How much iodine do you need for nuclear fallout?
The dosage is critical. A single administration of iodine for adults = 130 mg
1 month old = 16.5 mg
3 years old to 18 years old = 65 mg
If stable iodine is given, close follow-up is essential.
What type of iodine is used for radiation exposure?
Potassium iodide (KI) is a chemical compound that can be used to protect the thyroid gland from possible radiation injury caused by radioactive iodine (radioiodine). Some radiological emergencies may release large amounts of radioiodine to the environment.
How can you protect against nuclear radiation?
If you are indoors during a radiation emergency: Stay inside. Close and lock all windows and doors. Go to the basement or the middle of the building. …
If possible, turn off fans, air conditioners, and forced-air heating units that bring air in from the outside. Close fireplace dampers.
